What English Test Do You Need for a Spouse Visa?

To apply for a UK spouse visa or partner visa as a non-EEA national, you must pass an A1 Secure English Language Test (SELT) from a UKVI-approved provider. This proves to the Home Office that you have a basic level of English before entering the UK.

The A1 SELT tests Speaking and Listening only. You need to show that you can communicate in very simple, everyday situations — introducing yourself, answering personal questions, and understanding basic spoken English.
