For Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), you need a SELT at B1 level. The two most common options are:
A shorter test covering only Speaking and Listening. Suitable for most ILR applications where full four-skill testing is not required.
A comprehensive test covering Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking at B1 level. Required for some visa routes and preferred by some applicants as a more complete qualification.
Not everyone needs a SELT for ILR. Common exemptions include:
Nationals of certain majority English-speaking countries, or holders of qualifications taught in English, may be exempt.
Applicants aged 65 or over, or those with a long-term physical or mental condition that prevents them from meeting the requirement, may be exempt.
Nationals of certain countries where English is the majority language may be exempt — including the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and others.
The B1 SELT is a formal examination with specific task types that differ from everyday English use. Many applicants who consider themselves fluent in English are still surprised by the format on test day.
The most common reasons for failing a B1 SELT are unfamiliarity with the speaking task format, insufficient vocabulary range, and underestimating the structured writing tasks (ISE I only).
