Present Perfect vs Past Simple

The single most important grammar comparison in English, explained clearly, with a simple test you can apply every time you are unsure.

The Core Rule

Past simple is used for completed actions at a specific, finished time in the past. Present perfect is used when the time is unspecified, unfinished, or when the connection to the present moment matters more than exactly when something happened.

The simplest test Can you add a specific time (yesterday, in 2019, at 9am, last week)? If yes → past simple. If the time is unspecified, unfinished, or the present result matters more → present perfect.
