IELTS is a general English proficiency qualification used for universities and some professional bodies. A SELT is a specific type of test approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for visa and immigration applications.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a general English proficiency test developed by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge Assessment. It tests all four skills — Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking — and produces a band score from 1.0 to 9.0.
IELTS is accepted by thousands of UK and international universities, professional registration bodies and employers as proof of English proficiency. It is available in two formats: Academic (for university entry and professional registration) and General Training (for some immigration and work purposes).
A SELT (Secure English Language Test) is an English test specifically approved by UKVI for UK immigration purposes. Not all English tests are SELTs — only those delivered by UKVI-approved providers such as Trinity College London.
SELTs are available at specific CEFR levels (A1, A2, B1 and B2) depending on the visa route. The most common SELT tests are the Trinity College London GESE (Speaking and Listening) and ISE (all four skills).
IELTS is a general qualification. A SELT is specifically for UK visa/immigration applications.
IELTS gives a band score (1.0–9.0). A SELT assesses Pass/Fail at a specific CEFR level.

Both are typically valid for 2 years for immigration purposes.
SELTs tend to be cheaper than IELTS for the level tested.
The answer depends entirely on what you are applying for:
You need a SELT — not IELTS. Only UKVI-approved SELTs are accepted for visa purposes.
You need IELTS Academic (or sometimes a Cambridge qualification). A SELT is not accepted by universities.
You typically need IELTS Academic at a specific band. Check the specific requirements of your registration body.
A SELT at B2 level is required. Some applicants may meet the requirement through other means — check with UKVI.
