Book a Free ConsultationFor British citizenship by naturalisation, you need to pass a B1 SELT (Secure English Language Test) — specifically at the B1 level covering Speaking and Listening (GESE Grade 5) or all four skills (ISE I). This is the same level as required for ILR.
When you apply for British citizenship by naturalisation, you must demonstrate that you meet the English language requirement. For most applicants, this means passing a B1 SELT — a Secure English Language Test at the B1 level.
The B1 requirement tests your ability to handle everyday English conversations, understand clear spoken English and communicate your ideas in writing (for ISE I). It is the intermediate level on the CEFR scale.
You can use either:
A Speaking and Listening test only, assessing your ability to speak and understand English at B1 level. This is the most common option for citizenship applicants.
A full four-skill test covering Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing at B1 level. A more comprehensive qualification but requires more preparation.
Citizens of countries where English is the primary language — USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica and others.
Those with a degree taught in English from a recognised UK institution.
Those aged 65 or over, or those with a long-term physical or mental condition.
Those who have already passed an approved English test for a prior UK visa application may be exempt from resitting.
